Shake hands with the Interviewer and introduce yourself. Be prepared to ask and answer questions. An
interview should be a conversation, not an oral test. Think about your body language – if you look
relaxed you may feel more relaxed too. Speak clearly and don’t worry if there is an occasional moment
of silence as you think about an answer or formulate your next question
Do: Don’t:
* Be honest * Lie or exaggerate
* Listen; take time to reflect * Be negative
* Be energetic & enthusiastic * Yawn, slouch or stretch
* Make eye contact * Chew gum, hair or nails
* Give a firm handshake * Recite a prepared speech or brag
* Use your interviewer’s name * Interrupt your interviewer
* Arrive early * Be disinterested or nonchalant
* Bring a transcript with test scores * Criticize your teachers, school or friends
* Bring an elaborate portfolio, resume or display * Don’t give one word answers – elaborate
Make sure you get the name of the person who interviewed you – ask for his/her business card or write it
down.
AFTER THE INTERVIEW
Send a thank-you note to the interviewer. It can be brief but it should include mention of something you
discussed to remind the interviewer of your talk.
Compare notes with your parents. Are you more or less interested in the college now?
